It Started with a Kiss 2

Ne. Neměl hlad a nebyl unavený.

To mrazení nemělo nic společného s teplotou. Ne, tohle byly vzpomínky. Nejraději by zapomněl. Na všechno. Na všechny, kteří ho zradili. Na všechny, kteří ho využívali. Na všechny, kteří se mu vysmívali, pomlouvali, okrádali ho, rozhlašovali lži; kteří ho opustili, kteří kvůli němu zemřeli.

Nemyslet.

A zapomenout.

Postava se k němu sklonila a on jenom nehybně čekal. Možná to s ním skoncuje rychle. A možná i bezbolestně, pousmál se smutně. Ne, tolik štěstí by mít nemohl.

No, porovnávat to snad ani nešlo.

Okraje vidění mu pohlcovala temnota a on kromě únavy už necítil prakticky nic.

Proč to s ním neskoncoval? A kde je?

"Zajímavé," protáhl hluboký ochraptělý hlas a on se bleskově zvedl, aby prozkoumal okolí.
"Zarážející, trochu děsivé, svým způsobem úžasné a rozhodně nečekané..." pronesl opět ten hlas. Trochu naklonil hlavu, aby se mohl podívat před sebe, aniž by ji zvedal. Ten černokněžník. Jenom...
"Hm... Máme mnoho jmen. Zažili jsme mnoho kultur a civilizací a každá nám říkala jinak. Angru Mainya, Darna, Mba, Neret, Bhairavi, Asrael, Krodhadrvatas, Ahemait, Khosaadam Yenisei... Mohl bych nad tím strávit celou noc a stejně bych se nedostal ani k půlce. My dáváme přednost Aztal, protože to je první jméno, které nám lidé dali."
"Aztal."
"Hm... Zažili jsem mnoho věcí, dítě, a pamatujeme si mnoho věcí... Mnoho věcí... Co se ale před chvíli stalo... Ještě jsme o ničem takovém neslyšeli. A když jsme o tom neslyšeli, ještě se to nikdy nestalo."
"Je vás víc?"
"Je nás mnoho. Jsme nesmrtelní. Nerodíme se a neumíráme. Jenom jsme."
"A kdo jste?"
A my jsme nikdy ostrov neopustili. Tedy, náš klan ostrov nikdy neopustil, my jsme ho ale dokázali opustit."
"Vy?"
"Hm... My ano, ale zbytek klanu zůstal, nechápali proč jsme chtěli ostrov opustit, ale my jsme to už nemohli vydržet.
"Ano, ano...
"Ano i ne. Je to jako mít dvě mysli. Jedna která patří jenom nám a jedna která nás všechny spojuje. Centrální myšlení nejde... hm... vypnout. Jde ztišit, ale vždycky ho vnímáš. I když... Hm..."
"Děje se něco?"
"Ano.

Ještě to podivné prázdno... A nejenom zmizel. Možná to pomůže najít odpověď? Za pokus to stálo. Otočil se k aztulovi, ale okamžitě znehybněl.
"M-Mozkomor... proč?"
"Hm?"
"Vy jste... Ne, ne... Mozkomorové nemluví... Nebo... Proč?"
"Co je to mozkomor?"
"Vy."
"My?"
A probuzují pocit zoufalství, a on nic necítil, tedy, ne jako v přítomnosti mozkomora.
"Nechápu to."
"Hm?"
"Mozkomorové... Ehm, Aztal? Vy...
Chodím do kouzelnické školy a před dvěma lety utekl jeden trestanec z Azkabanu.

Zmatek.

Žádná pravidla, žádná nařízení a zákazy, žádná omezení. A ano, žáden zatraceně malý Ostrov.

To zatracené vězení.

Proč by tam vůbec měli zůstávat? No fajn, našli něco, co nás ohrožuje. No a? Pořád to není nic, co by nás mohlo zabít...

Možná by mohl risknout vlak?

***

Zpomalil.

***

Tam. V parku.

Poslední kroky byly nejtěžší a on se jenom silou vůle přinutil k pomalé chůzi. Pochoutka byla téměř na dosah a on tu pochoutku nechtěl vyděsit, kdyby to něco náhodou mělo nohy a chtělo utíkat.

Na houpačce seděl vlastník jeho pochoutky. Nebo to možná byla ona pochoutka? Pomalu, pomalu...

Oh, ne všechny, to ne.

A on se konečně rozhodl.

S povzdechem si to zamířil k dítěti.

In the Dark 5

"So, this is your place," Takumi said as Shin mindlessly entered the pin-code to open the door.
"Are you alright?" Tatsuma asked because he noticed the as they entered, Shin's face turned into the whitest shade of pale possible.
"Hey, Shin!"
"What?"
"I asked if you're alright, but you're obviously not."
"I'm fine..."
"Frustrated, Insecure, Neurotic and Emotional..."
"I'm really... okay," Shin smiled faintly, as he remembered a person who often said those words too.

"Can you wait here?" he said as he led them to the living room. "I'll go look for the recordings..."
"Okay," Takumi said though he followed Shin with his eyes as he was still worried about him, and so was Tatsuma.

"He's not fine..."
"Of course not," Tatsuma said. "I guess there is a reason for him to not stay at home."
"Yeah, maybe bad memories?"
"Most likely, he wouldn't have a reason to put on that face otherwise..."
"He looked like he was going to faint..." They wanted to speculate a bit more but stopped when they heard Shin's footsteps returning.

"Here it is," he said as he put the tape into the player and pushed the play button.

In that instant the world ceased to exist as they were instantly engulfed in the magic of music.

Shin sat in the armchair and closed his eyes.

"Wow," Tatsuma said.
"I can't even find proper words..."
"That was unbelievable... I would love to hear that live..."
"Me too. I feel more relaxed than after a day-long sleep."
"Hey, Shin, why didn't you perform those songs live? Isn't it..." Takumi cut himself off when he looked at the sleeping Shin.
"He's crying."
"Yeah, something's bothering him really hard..."
"Yeah, but when he relaxed it all went out of control."
"Should we wake him up?"
"We'd better not, let him rest... The door's auto-lock se there's no problem, right?"
"Yeah."
"Well, I got many answers tonight, but now I've got twice as many questions as before..."

***

"Hey, Yuu, where are you going?" Sousuke asked his friend who just started packing his school bag even though the classes haven't ended yet.
"Just can't sit still, I'm itching to hit something..."
"So you're gonna find some delinquents and start a fight?"
"Pretty much."
"Hey, hey... You aren't joking..."
"No way, I'm dead serious."
"Wait, Yuu, that's no good!"
"Don't worry, I'll be just fine; I just really need to vent or I'll end up killing someone..."
"Someone?"
"Yeah."

"Don't do anything stupid, it's my fault anyway, right?"

Sousuke froze, because it was Shin. He looked at Yuuichi worried; even before Shin appeared Yuuichi was all ready to burst. One seriously dangerous grin made its way across Sasaki's face as he stood up slowly. Then he went over to Shin's desk.

"You're right. It is your fault. I'm so pissed I can't even stand your presence."
"Yeah, I guessed as much. That's why I never intended to tell you..."
"That's so kind of you," he grinned and leaned against Shin's desk. "So first you tell me that, and now you're telling me what to do?"
"No, I just wanted to say to be careful with whom you're picking a fight, that's all..."
"Oh, how thoughtful... But you are the one I want to kill so would you at least shut up? Otherwise I'm really gonna kill you..."
"Yuu!"
"Shut up! I wanna beat him up so bad he won't be able to spout that bull ever again!"
"Okay..."
"What?" Yuuichi and Sousuke asked as though they'd heard wrong.
"I said okay," Shin repeated, stood up and started to pack his stuff.
"Are you serious?"
"Quite..."
"So you mean you'll let me beat you up?" Yuuichi asked, gradually getting more and more pissed off.

"Let's go," Shin said ignoring him and when he noticed Yuuichi isn't exactly cooperating, he grabbed his hand and simply pulled him along.

***

"So, what exactly are you up to?" Yuuichi asked as soon as they stopped and Shin finally let go of his hand.
"Nothing you wouldn't like," he shrugged and threw his bag to the ground so that he could move freely.
"You really meant it?"
"Of course. Or would you prefer to find some hooligans, beat them up and then watch as they go babbling to their big brother that would in return half-kill you?"
"Fine," Yuu smirked viciously as this scenario happened to him before and Shin assured him it won't happen in this case too. Even if he despised Shin because of his confession to him, he had to admit he really like his ideas...

He threw his bag next to Shin's and stood ready to fight.

Shin didn't attack as he didn't mean to win, he just wanted to let Sasaki vent his anger. Yuuichi on the other hand did nothing but attack as he had no need to put up a guard...

He realized right from the start that Shin's not going to attack. In any other circumstances he'd probably be pissed off, but in this single case it didn't bother him at all.

Yuuichi threw a punch and Shin dodged it easily, other time he blocked it with his arm. Sometimes the punches connected and Shin was pushed away by a few inches. After a few minutes he finally collapsed.

"I hope you're not thinking I'll settle for just this much."
"Don't worry, I'm still fine," Shin said back and wiped away the blood from his cut lip.

***

"What happened to you?" he asked surprised as Shin was covered in dust and bruises.

The man was quite tall and he had slender frame. The most noticeable fact however was that he was cross-dressing. He was wearing black yukata with yellow floral pattern on the hems and dark-wood geta sandals. He had his hair primped up with two kanzashis stuck into the bob.

"Nothing serious, don't worry..."
"Nothing serious my ass! You are bleeding! Come in quickly..."

He was led to a room upstairs.
"Wait here for a bit, I'll go pick a first aid kit..."
Shin didn't have to wait long and soon his friend returned.

***

"Did you finally come to terms with Shin?" Sousuke asked Yuuichi carefully, as he couldn't be sure enough what had happened the other day.
"Somehow..."
"So you're not angry with him anymore?"
"Well, I'm not going to kill him, but..."
"Then you didn't talk it out?"
"Not really, it's not something words can help..."
"Heh, he said the same thing..."
"Did he really?"
"Well, yeah. How can you live together then? Wouldn't it be easier to ask dorm's president to assign you or Shin to another room? Rather than fight on every occasion?"
"Maybe but... I'm not gonna move out and it's hard to talk with Shin when he's never near."
"He's never neat? What do you mean by that?"
"Well, we had the fight yesterday..."
"I know," Sousuke nodded gloomily, he never wanted the two to fight each other in the first place.
"I was really angry and after a while I lost control completely..."
"I see..."
"Some words were said..."
"What words?"
"Uhm... Let's say harsh words..."
"Yuu!"
"They just came out! It was like it was somebody else speaking. I can't say I didn't mean it but... I feel kinda bad because of it..."
"So he's been avoiding you since yesterday."
"Kind of..."
"You should apologize then."
"No fucking way."
"Yuu, you should-"
"Maybe I should apologize, but I'm not going to."
"You're hopeless."
"Maybe..." he wanted to continue but right then he caught a glance of Shin who just came in. "And here comes the menace itself."
"What?" Sousuke frowned but then he saw Shin as well.
"What, you're not even going to greet your roommate after all that crap you said the other day?"
"Good morning," Shin responded mechanically without stopping or even looking their way.
"Yeah, yeah... God, I'm tired. I sure hope you're not gonna spend the night tonight..."
"Did I wake you up?" Shin stopped.
"Of course; who would be able to sleep when you never shut up."
"What do you mean? Do I sleeptalk?"
"Just talking wouldn't be so bad, you damn sis-com..."

"Shin?" Sousuke asked as Shin froze as though petrified. "Are you okay?"
"Just let him be, I've had enough tonight..."
"Shut it Yuu. It's most likely your fault anyway."
"Like hell!"
"Are you okay?" he asked again.
"O-of course," he said but he had such an unhealthy expression that it was obvious he was lying. "I-I just remembered I forgot something important..."
"Phew, don't scare me like that..."
"Sorry..."

***

"Aneue!" sounded across the darkened room.
"That damned bastard," Sasaki growled into his pillow as he was just woken by Shin.
"Aneue..."
"Shut it you freaky sis-com!"

It was barely after the midnight and Yuu wanted to sleep but that was impossible as long as Shin kept going on about his big sis.

Yuuichi closed his eyes and tried to calm down, but yet another "Aneue" floated to him and made him get out of the bed. Shin kept quiet for a bit and Yuuichi was just about to lay back down, but before he could Shin started sleep-talking again.

"That's it!" he said as he looked at Shin sleeping uneasily. Jest when he wanted to yell at him, his roommate woke up sitting up. Yuu shut up immediately because he'd never seen Shin behaving like that.

Shin was breathing unsteadily, his eyes were wide open with pupils retracted to the tiniest of dots. His complexion was the colour unbecoming of any living human, and when the moonlight streamed into the room for a bit, he looked white, his cheeks flushed. His face was covered in sweat and his whole body was trembling.

"Hey! Are you alright?" Yuuichi asked concerned to the point that he even momentarily forgot his anger at Shin.

At the sound of Yuuichi's voice Shin flinched and looked up with panicky expression. Then he finally realized he was already awake.

He nodded to Sasaki's question as he didn't trust his voice right now. He pressed his hands to his face and started to take deep breaths to calm down a bit.
"Just a dream," he said finally.
"What dream?! That was a friggin' nightmare, idiot! You were calling out to your sister so it never occurred to me that it's not a pleasant dream! If I knew, I'd have woken you up earlier..."
"It's okay... It's not really an unusual dream..."
"Right. You sure you're fine?" It wasn't the first time he's been woken by Shin's voice; it was always so annoying and Shin had never woken up, even when he'd throw a pillow at him. He never imagined that when he was calling his sister, he was subconsciously looking for safety; he always thought that Shin's got an older-sister-complex.

"I woke you up again... Sorry..."
"It's not like you could help it... Try to get some sleep now..."
"I think I'm gonna go for a walk," Shin said instead; he was scared that the nightmare will return.

He stood up and threw some clothes on, then went to the door unsteadily.
"You sure? You'd better sleep some, or you're gonna be totally wasted in the morning..."
"It's okay. I wouldn't be able to fall asleep anyway," Shin tried to smile but his expression remained stubbornly upset.
"He really left," Yuu shook his head as the door closed. "Whatever, it's probably better not sleeping at all than having a nightmare like that..."

***

Shin was pacing mindlessly across the rooftop, back and forth, just to calm down. But still, whenever he blinked the nightmare flashed back mercilessly reminding him of the dream.

He stopped for a little while and leaned against a fence, then he slid down against it.

Terrified shrieks.

He flinched. Just for a moment he stopped concentrating and spaced off, and in that instant he could hear them.

People further away were talking enthusiastically over their phones about what they've just witnessed, some of them were even rude enough to film the scene. Other people, those standing closer, were partially crying out in joy that nothing happened to them and partially just standing there quietly unable to look away from the frightful sight in front of them.

Blood... Whole river of it...Still flowing relentlessly...

He shook his head to shoo those images away. They were so terribly real. Even just from the flashbacks he could feel as if it was happening right now before his eyes...

With a sigh he looked through the fence. There was a black stain on his right; a forested part of the mountain their school was built on. He followed long snakes of the street-lights with his eyes all the way to the horizon shining blindingly into the night. It looked almost like a gathering of fairies...

He looked up to the night sky. Beautiful. People could never something like this in the city, but as the school was built away from all those lights the night sky looked as if someone had spilled a glass of silver over it.

His eyes were closing shut and he knew he had to occupy his mind if he didn't want to succumb to sleep so he started pacing again. And then his phone rang granting him his wish. Luckily he changed before going out, not only would he be freezing but he wouldn't get this opportunity that is sure to keep the sleep away.

"Yes?"
"Of course. I'm not busy. What in the world would I be doing now in the middle of the night?"
"Go on."
"Okay. I'll drop by right away," he finished the call and then he smiled faintly; the sleep didn't stand a chance now.

In the Dark 4

"You've been somehow down lately," Sousuke said and looked at his friend whether he's in a mood for some conversation or not.
"Did something happen?" He was pushing his luck, certainly, but he wanted to know. Maybe talking about it would help Yuuichi, too. "Anyway, don't you know what happened to Shin? He's been absent from school for some time now, it he sick?" he asked but noticed a grimace that appeared on Sasaki's face. "Yuu?"
"Don't mention him in front of me."
"O.K." he nodded troubled but he was now pretty sure that the two of them got into a fight. "Let's go to a pub."
"What? Aren't we minors? What's the point?"
"As if this has ever troubled you…" Sousuke laughed.
"True enough," Yuuichi smiled faintly.

***

"Hi, Shin! Are you okay already?"
"What?"
"Sasaki said you were sick," Takumi said.
"Really?"
"Yeah, though he said you are sick permanently and that it's incurable, but hopefully not contagious," Takumi laughed.
"Ha…" Shin sighed. "I guess he was right…" he muttered.
"What?"
"I'm okay now, he was just joking…"
"Yeah, I guessed as much."
"Well then… If you're okay, you don't mind accompanying us, right?" said a person entering the hall and both of them turned to him.
"Tatsuma," Takumi smiled as he recognized his roommate.
"Are you coming then?" he repeated the question.
"Where are you going anyway?" Shin asked purely out of politeness.
"Just a pub…"
"What?" Shin gave them a look of disbelief.
"Well, we are teenagers too, what are you so surprised about?" Takumi laughed out loud.
"I just…"
"It's okay. I'm just putting my dorms-pres role aside for today. I just wanted to have some fun, after all, the mid-term tests just ended…"
"I guess I'll join," Shin smiled shyly.
"You'd better," Tatsuma laughed enthusiastically. "If you passed I'd really get worried. No normal teenager passes chances like this one."
"Yeah, I guess…"

***

"Are we by any chance going to the Cage?" Shin asked after about fifteen minutes of walk from a station.
"Yeah. How do you know about the Cage? I've thought you're always cooped in your room…"
"I used to go there in middle school…"
"Really?" both Takumi and Tatsuma looked at him taken aback.
"I didn't go there to drink; it's just that we liked the place…"
"We?"
"My sister and… and me," he said and for some reason he sounded somehow cheerless.
"Really? Where's your sister now?"
"She was admitted to a high school in Nagasaki…"
"Why so far?"
"Apparently, there's good school with a great music-education program. She likes music, well, both of us do…" he smiled.
"Really now? Why didn't you go there too? You're staying in the dorms anyway…"
"Stuff happened… I wanted to stay in Tokyo, well, at least when I was applying I did…"
"Now you don't?"
"Well, now I don't care anymore… Whatever… Like I said; stuff happened…"
"Okay, we're not gonna prey," Takumi said as to stop Tatsuma from interrogating Shin.

"Shin-chan!" somebody shouted the very second they'd entered.
"Master," Shin smiled and went straight to the bar.
"I haven't seen you for so long! How are you doing?"
"I guess I'm fine."
"You've brought friends with you today?" he asked as Takumi and Tatsuma came after him to the bar.
"Yeah, that's Mizumachi Takumi and Segawa Tatsuma, both of them are my senpai," he introduced them.
"You didn't have to tell him we're still in high-school…"
"It's okay, it's okay," Master said as he was already filling shot-glasses with a crystal-pure liquid. "First one is on the house, boys," he smiled and put the glasses in front of them.
"Wow, now this is something you don't see everyday…" Tatsuma said and Takumi only nodded.
"You are with Shin-chan so there's no way you are troublemakers. And as such you deserve some rightful fun, right?"
"You have some real patronage here, Shin," Takumi smiled.
"He helped me many times and it's always exciting listen to his lyrics…"
"What?"
"He's…"
"No, not now, Master… It's already thing of the past…"
"What are you talking about? I still have stored all of your favourite LPs... And look here," he said and stepped aside to let Shin see the wall covered with posters right behind him.
"In the Dark?" Takumi asked as he noticed that all the posters advertised (or used to) one and only one music band. "I've never heard of them."
"I did," Tatsuma said. "They are legends in the area. I've heard they performed only a few times..."
"That's right," master said, proudly blowing his face. "And all their concerts took place here."
"That's what I've heard too," Tatsuma nodded. "They were somehow mysterious. At a time, people were talking that even though their music is one of the rough kinds, it will calm you down no matter what. That it's pleasant to listen to," he said. "I've always wanted to listen to their music, but they've never released any CDs so I had no chance. I transferred to Tokyo only this year and I wanted to finally meet them, but they don't perform anymore..."
"You looked troubled the whole way here, right?" Takumi turned to Shin. "It's a pity they don't perform anymore, maybe it would help you if their music really worked miracles..."
"Yeah... The tones engulfing senses...

Hide your worries - brush them away
For after long night always comes day
One you - one song...

That sure would help..." Shin said.
"What was that?"
"What?"
"That 'hide your worries' thing..."
"Lyrics."
"So you've heard them?" Tatsuma asked all excited.
"Of course he did, he said he used to come here right?" Takumi reminded him.
"Yeah, sure..."
"Oh, boys..." Master laughed out loud. "He doesn't know the lyrics because he'd heard them sing! He knows the lyrics because he's the one who wrote them! Shin is one of the In the Dark duo!"
"Shit... Really?!" Tatsuma glued himself to Shin in that instant. But he wasn't the only one. The moment Master voiced those words it got really crowded in the bar-area.
"I guess you're this much popular," Takumi laughed out loud.
"Hey! We're only here to have some fun, he's not performing!" Tatsuma was trying his best to shoo them away, and thanks to his pissed-off look on his face he was even somehow successful. They couldn't talk few people out of intruding, but they settled for an autograph.
"Damn, tough rivals..." Tatsuma sulked and then he turned at Shin with victorious smirk and started questioning him.

"Like I said, I used to come here very often with my sister. Back then the bar got into a trouble so we asked and finally found out that it's not making much profit..."
"Yeah, I had two loan sharks on my tail, but the Cage wouldn't make much profit to pay it off... Then Shin and Mako came up with the idea of live performances. They'd always liked music and they played some instruments."
"Yeah, the very first performance of In the Dark was awful..."
"It was a great success," Master continued his story ignoring Shin, and Tatsuma with Takumi laughed at Shin's sulking face. "The customers started to flow in, they were even willing to pay just to get inside."
"We always performed for free, we weren't professionals and as such it would be kind of unfair..."
"Yeah, and just like that they got me the customers I needed. The loan sharks went away with the profit but I was clear on the bill... In the Dark performed even after that and in no time they got famous in the area. Well, performances stopped when Mako went to a music school in Nagasaki, but I guess we haven't heard the last of her..."
"She's never been good at melting in with the crowds," Shin nodded.
"Neither have you," Master laughed.
"Well, he's mastered it," Takumi said merrily.
"Really? That's unexpected..."

***

"What's going on over there?" Sousuke wondered as the crowds started cramping around the bar.
"Maybe drinks for free?"
"Hey, what's going on?" he asked a man from the crowd.
"In the Dark's here!"
"Really? Are they performing?"
"No idea..."

"What's In the Dark?"
"It's a local band, they only perform in this bar. But they are the real deal, when I was in the junior high I've heard one of their performances here; they're amazing!"

"Are they performing?" he asked another man who was just returning.
"Nope, it's only one of them. But who knows, hope dies last... If one is here, maybe the other will show up eventually..."
"Which one is here?"
"Shin."

Yuuichi shuddered at the sound of that name and his eyes subconsciously wandered to the vicinity of the bar.

"Hell no. You must be kidding me," he said the second he spotted Shin sitting there.
"What?"
"My dear roommate's here," he said sourly.
"Oh... Hey, Yuu..."
"What?"
"I guess this could be a coincidence but... When they said the Shin of In the Dark is at the bar, they couldn't have meant... Right?"
"No idea... Can't be, right?"
"I sure have no clue..."
"But if you were at their performance..."
"Firstly, it was like two years back, a one-time experience; and secondly, I was in the back rows, I couldn't see the stage at all..."
"Hm..."
"I'll ask," Sousuke said finally, stood up and run off.

"Hey, guys!" he greeted the bunch at the bar.
"Harukawa, what are you doing here?" Tatsuma asked as he knew Sousuke from Kendo Club.
"Hi, senpai... Uhm... Hi, Shin..."
"Sousuke... Does that mean that..." Shin stopped himself with a sad expression crawling back on his face and his eyes immediately found Yuuichi in the crowd. He sighed.
"Hey, don't start sighing at me too," Sousuke said. "I had quite some troubles to make him relax."
"Then I'm sorry; he's back in killing mood," Shin sighed again.
"I've no idea what happened, but can't you guys talk it out?"
"It's not something words could help..."
"By the way, I've heard a rumours about In the Dark being here, and then I saw you... Hey, Shin, by any chance..."
"You know In the Dark?" Tatsuma asked all enthusiastic again.
"I sure do. I was only at one of their concerts but it was brilliant."
"Then how come you didn't recognize Shin before?"
"Then it's true, just as I thought... Well I couldn't see the stage back then..."
"Hm..."
"Why didn't you tell us anything about it?"
"Why? In the Dark is covered by two people. The other one is in Nagasaki right now, so there's no way we could perform, right?"
"Why in Nagasaki?"
"Mako went there to a music-oriented high school."
"There's a conservatory in Tokyo!"
"She didn't want to attend conservatory, but a normal high-school and that one had a great music program so she went there..."
"I wanted to hear In the Dark again..."
"Well, if you really insist, I can go home and dig some MCs we recorded. It's old stuff, but we've never performed all our songs, so maybe you can find something you don't know..."
"You have records?" Tatsuma and Sousuke both goggled at him.
"Well, if Mako didn't take it with her, that is..."
"You lived together?" Sousuke asked surprised.
"She's my twin sister."
"Twin sister?" all three guys asked at once as they've never heard anything about Shin having a twin.
"Yea..."
"If you can dig some recordings I'll grant you any wish," Tatsuma said and Sousuke only nodded in silent agreement.

"Okay, first things first. I'll call Mako and ask if she left something at home," Shin announced and stood up. "Can I borrow the back for a bit, Master?"
"Sure."
"Thanks," he said and jumped over the bar as if it was nothing.

"My god, I thought he was gonna break his neck..."
"Is he at some sport club?" Tatsuma asked.
"Not as far as I know..."
"Well, that's another unexpected thing," Master frowned.
"Really?"
"Yeah. If I recall he has some serious skills at kendo. Mako was into karate at the time too..."
"Kendo?" Tatsuma asked. "Well if it isn't surprise... I'm the president of our school's Kendo Club, and Sousuke here is my cute kouhai..."
"Wow... One surprise after another..." Sousuke agreed.

"Alright, Mako said she left the oldest stuff at home, so I guess I can find you some MCs, but since they're the oldest stuff, they're probably not gonna be really good..."
"Pfft, don't say it like that when you've just quoted one of them not a few minutes ago," Master laughed.
"Fine."
"When will you go home?"
"Probably... now... My leave of absence in the dorms is valid till tomorrow, so I guess one night at my place won't kill me..."
"You live in the area?" all three of them looked at him askance.
"Yea, like five minute walk... I'll drop by with the tapes in a while so you can just wait here..."
"We're going with you," Takumi said immediately.
"Are you not planning on going back?"
"Well, there's someone who finds my presence poisonous, so I won't be the one destroying his Saturday Night Fever..."
"Yuu... I guess he's pissed..." Sousuke agreed. "We won't be staying much longer, so I guess I'll come get the MCs on Monday."
"Okay."
"And as for us, we're leaving with you," Takumi said and Tatsuma nodded.

In the Dark 3

Sasaki was ignoring anything and everything that was happening in the classroom until the bell rang the end of the homeroom class. He stood up as he finally decided and proceeded to Shin's desk. He stood right in front of the boy meaning to ask Shin about his spending the nights out but he laughed out loud instead.

The boy appeared to be staring mindlessly outside the window next to his desk, but at a closer look one could finally notice that he wasn't looking anywhere - he was sleeping as soundly as a kindergarten kid at after-lunch nap-time.

He intended to talk to him during lunch break, which was right now, but Shin was sleeping so peacefully Sasaki didn't have the heart to wake him up. Then he noticed an opened textbook at Shin's desk and started laughing even more; it was geography textbook, opened probably at the beginning of their first period today and left open ever since.

"What's so funny?" Sousuke asked.
"Nothing, nothing… I'm just wondering how Shin managed to fall asleep in the way nobody - including teachers - noticed anything for a whole day."
"He's sleeping?"
"Yeah…"
"No way in hell, that's not possible… Not in that position. No one would be able to-" he stopped and started laughing too when he finally saw Shin clearly.
"WTF…"
"Exactly my thoughts," Sasaki nodded smiling.
"It's rare to see you in that good mood recently," Sousuke said to his friend as they were pacing aimlessly through the school corridors.
"Yeah, I haven't laughed this much in a long time."
"I guess. Why did you approach him anyway?"
"I just wanted to ask him something, he's my roommate after all."
"Really? I had no idea. Didn't you tell me you were alone in your room?"
"Yeah, back then I really was. He moved in a little into the November."
"Why?"
"Do idea, really."
"Didn't he tell you?"
"We don't talk much... more like we don't talk at all…"
"Why? Are you not getting well with each other?"
"Well, I like my privacy and he always has some stuff to do, so we came to an agreement of some sort."
"Agreement?"
"Yeah. As long as I take care of his alibi for curfews he's not gonna intrude very often."
"So he lives there yet he doesn't?"
"More like he only comes to change, or to pick his bag when he goes to school. Well, sometimes I can notice the signs of him sleeping in his bed, but not that we meet. If he happens to sleep in the room I mostly have no knowledge of it. He returns when I'm already sleeping, and leaves while I'm still asleep; and just so you know: I rarely go to sleep before midnight and always wake up at seven."
"So that's why he's sleeping at school?"
"Well, I guess he didn't sleep at all tonight."
"Really? How come?"
"He woke me incidentally at 4 A.M. when he'd just arrived. He just took a shower, changed and left again."
"What was he doing all night?"
"I haven't the slightest… I've been meaning to ask him today, cuz my curiosity level is way off charts, but - as you can see - he's out of order right now…"
"Maybe he's got a girlfriend?"
"She would have to live alone…"
"Then maybe an older girlfriend…"
"No kidding…"

He sighed when they'd finally left. Feel of Sasaki's presence woke him up instantly but he was pretending to be asleep. He remembered again the very first time they've met:

Sasaki was sitting on his bed listening to some CD when Shin entered the room Sasaki looked up momentarily giving the most unwelcome look one could muster; as he probably already got accustomed to being alone and saw Shin as an intruder, but he greeted Shin anyway…

Back then Shin couldn't stop the shivers running down his spine. He could hear his heartbeat in his ears, his hands were trembling and his vision got so sharp as though he was looking through a magnifying glass. He could feel this unsettling feeling even now, whenever Sasaki was around. All it took was to catch a glimpse of his aura and all his awareness was immediately boosted-up at max. As though he were stabbed to his back, he could always feel shivers whenever he spoke out. He couldn't name the feeling but he was sure it was a fear, an unknown nameless fear. As the time passed he could control it little by little, but not completely.

***

"What's wrong with you?" Sasaki asked and Shin flinched.
"What?"
"You are plain white, just like my test's answer sheet! How can you even ask?"
"I've no idea what are you talking about."
"Come on," he finally lost his temper and stood up.
"I'm alright, okay?"
"Look, I know we're not exactly getting on well with each other, as if there was a chance to when we are rarely talking with each other. But even I can tell you're behaving stranger than usual, and that's really something, cuz you've been acting weirdly all the time…"
"You must be imagining things," Shin backed off as Sasaki was closing in on him.
"I'm NOT!" he said and smiled viciously as he just managed to corner Shin who had his back pressed against the wall and as such he couldn't move any farther away.
"You must be…"
"Like I said: I AM NOT! Now, spill it out!"
"I like you, okay?"
"What?"
"I like you," Shin repeated in a low voice avoiding Yuuichi's stare.
"Are you joking?"
"I'm not. Sorry about that, it's not like I can help it, it just happened. I never intended to tell you," he was talking so quietly that Yuuichi was forced to focus on his hearing in order to even hear him.
"Sorry," Shin repeated and as Yuuichi was frozen from shock, he got away from him. He only grabbed his jacket and run away from the room leaving Yuuichi speechless as he was.

"SHIT!" he berated himself as he stopped on the ground floor.

As he was thinking what he is going to do from now on, his phone rang
"Yeah?" he answered it immediately.
"What happened?"
"What?" he asked angrily despite recognizing a caller: Minato Susumu.
"I just asked, sorry. You just sounded angry, which is quite unusual."
"I'm angry at myself, but never mind that. Why are you calling?"
"It's your grandfather, he asked me to call you."
"Why?"
"Well, he wants to see you. It's been like two months since he saw you, and due to the circumstances it really wasn't a pleasant meeting…"
"Yeah," Shin nodded when he remembered the last time he saw his relatives. "Tell him I'll come as soon as possible, even today…"
"It's quite far and it's nothing important - just family visit… If you have some urgent business…"
"It's okay. I was just looking for some reason to get away from here anyway."
"Did something bad happen?"
"Nothing important, just a… hah, let's just say a little quarrel and leave it at that."
"Was it somebody from…"
"Nope, just a roommate... really... nothing serious. I'll ask for a leave of absence at school and go catch a train."
"Okay."
"I'll mail you the details when the train arrives at the station… Are you staying at my grandfather's tonight?"
"Yeah. You can mail me anytime, I'll tell him right away, there're no plans for today either."
"Okay, see you later then."
"Yeah, see you."

He put the phone to a pocket and searched for a wallet.
"Lucky," he said when he'd found it as it meant he didn't have to return to his room; the very place he wanted to avoid the most.

He went to a front desk and asked for the leave-application form.
"Are you going somewhere? The curfew starts in hour or so," somebody said and he turned to the person. It was Mizumachi Takumi, the dorms president.
"Yeah, something like this."
"You look troubled…"
"Just don't ask: 'What happened?' I'm already starting to hate that question…"
"Sure, but I'm really concerned."
"It's nothing," Shin replied mechanically. "See you around, I guess," he said and bid him farewell.

In the Dark 2

"Shit," he cursed one time after another as he was walking home. As usual, he spent entire afternoon in an arcade centre and didn't even notice how fast the time flew by.

There was no time to waste so he took all the possible shortcuts he knew about.

BANG!

"Gang fight?" he muttered to himself as he stopped to listen to the shooting that continued relentlessly. "I sure like fights, but... Getting shot? No, thanks..."

When he finally decided to move on the shooting finally stopped.
"Over already?" he wondered. He was itching to check the outcome but he was really in a hurry...

He run through the corridors until he finally reached his room.

"No sticker," he heaved a sigh of relief as he checked the door. "Lucky."

They had a curfew at nine in the evening. Not being in your room at the time meant trouble. The watch usually placed a sticker on your door, to inform you that you're awaited in the dorms-president's room. No sticker means no worries; he got there in time.

He opened the door and entered.

"As I thought," he said when he didn't find his roommate present. "Oh well, who cares..."

He was actually pretty glad they didn't meet very often. Even though he was dying to know what the guy is always doing, he preferred him not being here.

He heard some voices in the hallways and he knew the watch is about to come to their room. Sasaki quickly took few textbooks out of his bag and put them on his roommate's desk, turning the table light on. Then he went to a bathroom to let the shower run and closed the door.

Just in time because right as he was sitting down on a bed he could hear those guys knocking on the door.
"Just got here, I see," one of them said as he noticed Sasaki was still wearing shoes and jacket, and his face was flushed from the mad sprint across the town.
"I made it," he pointed out.
"Right... And where is Shin?"
"He's taking a shower," he said faux-sulkily.
"If you weren't spending so much time in some arcade you could've taken shower earlier," the other guy laughed.
"Thanks. I don't plan on becoming a bookworm like that idiot..."
"Fine, fine... Then good night"

"Now then," Sasaki said after he closed the door, and looked around the room.

He took back his textbooks and turned the table lamp at Shin's off. Then he went to take a shower.

He didn't really like Shin, well, he had no time to get to know him better as Shin was rarely present. But he liked his own private space, so he was glad his roommate came up with this charming deal: as long as Sasaki helps him pass through the curfew checks he can have the room mostly for himself. Really charming deal; he agreed to it immediately, of course. This small task for not having to put up with your roommate? Perfect.

Originally, he was a sole occupant of this room, however two months into a school-year he unexpectedly got a roommate - his classmate Kurotsuki Shin. He didn't know why was Shin staying at dorms when he was attending from home before. Then they came to inform him he will be staying with Shin. Curiosity level one exceeded... Then Shin came up with the deal. Curiosity level two exceeded... And he really stayed true to his words and only rarely showed up at the room even though his school attendance was perfect. Staying all nights out? Curiosity level three exceeded...

He scratched his head and brushed away his overgrown black hair aside as it was falling into his eyes and the water dripping from it was irritating.

***

He opened his eyes at a rustling sound. It was still night and he frowned as he could feel someone's presence. Something fell making another noise, well, it appeared to be this loud only because there was a total silence all around as everybody was sleeping.
"Would you stop that? I wanna sleep..."
"Sorry," he heard someone's weak voice - Shin, he realized.
"What's the time?" Sasaki asked anyway.
"Three... Four A.M."
Sasaki frowned even more. "What the hell is he up to staying out till this hour?"
"Gods, try to keep it down, ok?"
"Yeah, sure... Sorry."

Sasaki didn't stop frowning as he was caught deep in thoughts. True, he didn't talk with Shin much, but he thought Shin's voice sounded strange.

He could see his roommate's black silhouette as he soundlessly went to the bathroom. As his eyes were accustomed to darkness he also noticed Shin took a change of clothes with him.

When the boy left the bathroom fifteen minutes later, he'd already changed. Sasaki then could hear other noises: some rustling, some rummaging and then zip. Then the door opened and he looked at Shin surprised.

"You leaving?" he couldn't believe his eyes.
"Yeah, I just came to change. Sorry for waking you up."
"That one I will never understand."

***

"Could you pay attention to what I'm saying?" their homeroom teacher asked Sasaki when he stood right in front of him.
"Uhm?" Yuuichi turned to him and looked at him askance as he had no idea what he was talking about.
"Now that I have your attention, could you tell me what we'd just agreed on?"
"No idea."

The teacher sighed, shook his head and continued with organizing class' school trip.

Sasaki looked back at Shin, at whom he was staring all the time.

Shin was sitting on his left, the row in front of him. He was leaning his head against his hand and seemed gazing blankly outside.

***

"What happened to you, boss?" one of the men asked surprised, before his expression changed to anger as he noticed his boss was covered in blood.
"It's not mine," his boss reassured him. "Just as we were signing a contract we got assaulted by Ouyama."
"Then..."
"No, it's okay. Even though we agreed there'll be no weapons, their representative appeared to be a very skilled fighter."
"Did he really?" kashira asked.
"Yeah, he was more like an assassin than a future kumichou," the boss laughed.
"You like the boy."
"That I do. You rarely meet someone like that nowadays, even in yakuza world."
"He must've really impressed you."
"He did, alright. Well, I had been reluctant at first and when I first saw him I got unsure. Then he spoke out in a polite manner you rarely come across and I started liking him. I'd thought a kid like him as a boss-to-be will be either an incapable naïve brat or an impolite and cheeky bastard. He was neither and I was glad. Then they attacked us and he pushed me to the ground first thing. Then he took the written agreement of our clans and gave it to me to hold onto as not to get lost in the incident."
"Did he come with a bodyguard?"
"No. I've taken Masamune, but he caught the very first bullet aimed at me to protect me."
"There was a shooting?"
"Yeah, the assailants brought guns. I have no idea how they'd found out about our meeting, though. Anyway, he took Masamune's gun and fought like a yakuza. When he ran out of bullets, he fought with knife. And even if this comes as a shock, they stood no chance against him."
"Impressive."

As they were talking about details of what had happened they could hear footsteps outside the room.
"Excuse me," the person said and the door slowly slid open.
"Did something happen?"
"Boss, Kurai's representative came to visit you. Is it alright to let him in?"
"Invite him in," the boss nodded surprised no less than his subordinates.
"Didn't you just meet Kurai? What are their intentions showing up this early in the morning?" kashira frowned; rightfully as it was barely seven in the morning. Maybe somebody from their main branch in Kyoto?

"Pardon my intruding at this hour," the man from Kurai said as he bowed slightly at the door and entered the room.
"Mako-chan," Byakuran's kumichou said for greetings and smiled at the visitor. Kashira looked at them surprised - he could easily understand addressing people on the first-name basis, as their boss was quite old and as such he tended to do so often; but "-chan"?

Their visitor appeared to be surprisingly young, but kashira concluded he isn't as their boss didn't particularly like youth. He always grumbled about today's kids; that they only want money, fame and only show disrespect to anything that stands in their way. The visitor was wearing black trousers and black leather jacket with stiff collar. His shoulder-length hair was tied into a ponytail though his bangs were falling to his eyes.

"What brings you here? Didn't we just finish one meeting?" the boss asked and his subordinates froze astonished as they realized this is the man who saved their boss' life, the Kurai clan's kumichou successor.

Even kashira frowned in disbelief. He tried to imagine this kid as an assassin their boss described but he wasn't able to do so. The kid's face looked awfully peaceful and calm.

He came to him, nevertheless, and shaking hands with him he thanked him for saving their boss' life.
"This is nothing that needs thanks," Mako said. "But it certainly is the thing that brings me here," he continued as he turned to Byakuran's kumichou.
"Really?"
"Yes. Their assault was clearly hostile permeating boundaries our gumi's territories and as such, it could be taken as a call to arms on our side, in other words: a war with Ouyama," he said. Byakuran's kumichou nodded in a silent agreement. He was a proud boss of yakuza but he never wished for wars, thus he was insecure in thoughts one can come in any moment. Kashira could easily read the worries written on his boss' face, his attention was directed to the Kurai's representative, though. Even though he could easily pass for a high-schooler with his looks, his speech manner told him otherwise. Even now he could imagine this youth as kumichou. His words were right-to-the-point, and he spoke in a kind and respectful manner, he didn't assume and didn't blame, he just spoke bare truth in a most pleasant of ways. Despite it being their first meeting, kashira already felt a growing respect for this Kurai's kumichou successor.

"I presume your clan doesn't yearn for a war and neither do we. I decided to ask Ouyama for their explanation of the ongoing situation, then."
"You were at Ouyama's headquarters?"
"I was," he nodded. "I spoke with their kumichou, but he insisted on not knowing about the incident," he reported in calm voice but shadows of worries ran through his face one after another assuring the people present that he had his doubts about what Ouyama's kumichou claimed. Then his face finally brightened. "Nevertheless, in order not to repeat mistakes I asked him for his word in a written fashion that those mistakes will never happen again. The word of the boss should be taken as law when spoken but nowadays… I came to deliver his letter to you, as well as written pact of truce between Ouyama and Byakuran gumi."
"Did he have any objections?" Byakuran's kumichou asked as soon as the astonishment passed its peak and he could finally choose right words.
"He had none," the Kurai's representative said and smiled. They however noticed the dangerous smirk that flashed across his face but was gone immediately. Even kashira couldn't help but feel anxious about what would happen if they made an enemy out of Kurai in time the gumi was in this man's hands.
"You said truce…"
"Yes. All of the Ouyama executives were informed immediately," he added.
"Are you sure?"
"Positive, I was still present at the time. They spoke few code-words but that's nothing to worry about."
"What words?" Byakuran's kumichou asked suspiciously.
"Nothing serious, really."

"Boss! Boss!"
"What happened?" kashira asked stopping the man from entering the room.
"It's the news in the television. They were saying they've found many dead bodies. I spotted Ouyama's kashira in the crowd in front of cameras.
"It was probably our meeting place," the boss waved the topic away.
"No, Boss. It was at riverbanks of the Sumida River."
"What happened over there?" kashira asked.
"They've just found out about it. I guess we will hear more information in no time."
"Mako-chan?" Byakuran's kumichou turned his attention to the youth.
"They tried to intercept the message delivery," he shrugged and made an expression as innocent as newborn baby. Byakuran's kumichou laughed out loud.
"What?" the man looked askance at their boss.
"It was his doing…"
"But, Boss, there was like thirty dead."
"Well, I guess I'm glad he's not our enemy,' their boss said looking at Kurai contently.
"It was nothing; I knew about the ambush from the start," Mako shrugged again.
"How come?"
"The code-words… He said to his subordinates that the truce was signed. But if it's not delivered it holds no meaning, as one side wouldn't know and the other side would never bring it up…"
"But… They think it wasn't delivered, now…"
"Thirty fatalities in one place from one origin; there will be no news that don't mention it. I guess all their branches already know the attempt has failed."
"I guess that warrants another set of thanks," Byakuran's kumichou said.
"Please, don't mention it; a small errand like this is nothing that deserves thanks," the boy bowed slightly.
"I just wonder why you didn't ask for a truce in the name of your gumi, too," kashira said.
"Well, my grandfather doesn't like them and neither do I. As long as they fear him, my grandfather is content. When they finally decide to start a war with us, no matter how much he hates the war, he is not going to be the least forgiving, and they know it well enough as to not try anything like this."

"I told you you're going to pass!" she shouted and hugged her little brother. "Congrats, Ma-chan!"
"Thanks, aneue," the boy smiled happily despite the embarrassment as she was hugging him in front of a huge notice board, a place currently crowded by students and their friends and families.

***

"Has she written back yet?" she asked.
"Nope. I wrote to her like three days ago, but she still hasn't replied."
"That's it. I'm gonna call her," the woman stood up from the sofa and headed for kitchen, where she'd left her bag with a cell phone in it.

"So what did Mako say?" he asked.
"She's free every weekend, for now. She said she'd joined one of the music clubs - as expected - and that they're gonna get busy soon, but for now they still have plenty of free time."
"So, when did she say she's coming home?"
"Next week. We'd better prepare, what with you two together… I sure enjoy my peace and quiet with only one of you," she laughed out.
"Come on, aneue, it's not like we are always turning the house upside down…"
"Yeah, maybe not always but very often."
"Okay, okay, I get it. I'll try to leave at least the walls intact. Anyway, we're still going to the amusement park and then to a theatre, right? We're not gonna have much energy left after that…"
"I'm just joking, Ma-chan, honey," she smiled charmingly and sat next to him on a sofa.
"I know. I also know something like this in not likely to tire us out, we'll still have enough energy for little neighbourhood-arcade-tour," he declared contently.
"Yeah," she chuckled. "I've never even hoped something like this would exhaust you…"

***

"So, Sasaki how's your roommate? You're staying at the dorms, right? It must be really cramped in one room… Is there any fun at the dorms at all?"
"I'm not spending much time there," Sasaki said. "And my roommate is best of all cuz I ain't got one," he snickered. "If I were to spend my time or share my private space with anyone I would've already gone crazy."
"So your room is yours alone?"
"Yeah."
"Good for you, bro," Sousuke said cheerfully. "Anyway, are you free this afternoon?"
"Sure... Why?"
"Cuz I got free tokens for the arcade centre by the Tama River."
"Really?"
"Yeah. My bro was working for them - some advertisements and ads in tabloids, I guess - and he got free tokens from the owner as a bonus."
"That's great."
"When will we meet then?"
"Uhm, I can take my bag to my room right after classes and I'm free to go. I guess we will be dropping by your place anyway..."
"Yeah..."

The door slid open and their math teacher entered.
"I will take the attendance now," he announced and took the attendance sheet out of a desk's drawer.
"Atou, Keita!"
"Here."
"Kamishi, Seiji!"
"Present."
"Kurotsuki, Shin!"
"Yeah."
"Sasaki, Yuuichi!"
"Hai."
...

***

"Do you plan on inviting somebody?"
"Why?"
"To get to know some other people, perhaps?"
"I don't exactly get on well with others."
"I know. That's why you should put in some effort."
"Not interested."
"As always... Is there nobody in your class who'd want to spend some time with you?"
"Hey! You put it as if I'm a bother to be around!"
"Well, you do have rather short temper..."
"Yeah. That's totally right. You forgot to mention the hateful character, foul mouth, always on the loose and always ready to pick a fight..."
"Well, yeah... That too..." he laughed innocently.
"Yeah, yeah... I'm a total delinquent, so why don't we just skip few classes and go to the arcade right away?"
"No objections," Sousuke agreed. "I'm not in the mood for physics or P.E. anyways," he laughed.

***

"You sure you can handle it?"his sister asked.

She was quite tall; her slender figure was fitted into tight jeans and long-sleeved white shirt. She was very beautiful. She had slightly tanned skin and long black hair tied into a ponytail.

"Of course I can!"

The boy walking with her was little shorter; he looked younger than her by up to ten years. He had little overgrown hair - almost touching his shoulders - with bangs falling into his eyes. He was wearing black sport trousers and green jumper.
"At least give me the backpack, you're gonna get crushed under it."
"It's okay, it's no big deal."
"Okay, then. We still have more shopping to do so make sure to tell me when you're getting shorter because of the weight, ok?"
"Let's go; and I'll have you know I grew up five centimetres since the last year..."

They walked past few stalls when there was suddenly a commotion as people screamed and a screeching sound echoed through the shopping centre. It was clearly some car's suspension crying out as it was entering a corner. Then, finally, the car appeared as well.

It headed for the greatest of crowds without even grazing the brakes. Some people shrieked, some tried to get away from its way... Then the car crashed.

After a few minutes the sound of sirens announced arrival of an ambulance. There were few wounded people and one fatality - the car crashed right into the beautiful woman...

Dangerous place, Tokyo...
